Before I go any further, I should point out that Chad Bowers, the co-writer of the book I am about to discuss, is a member of this website. So if you think we’re only covering it because we’re biased to support him, then … you’re absolutely right.

With a physical release set for next month, Oni has decided to release “Down Set Fight,” the new graphic novel by Bowers, Chris Sims and Scott Kowalchuk a month early as a serialized mini-series for $1.99 a pop. Originally announced as part of a digital initiative from Oni that didn’t come to fruition, “Down Set Fight” has been a long awaited release from at least us. Telling the story of a former professional American footballer as he battles against an army of mascots, “Down Set Fight” is a funny and irreverent look at the fandom that can overtake professional sports fans mixed with a good ol’ fashioned monster mash.

It’s a good read, is what I’m saying. Almost too good of a read, in fact, and certainly an early contender for one of our favorite graphic novels of the year. No bias. Promise.

So congrats to Chad Bowers on all his assumed success. And also, to offer some balance, damn you Chad Bowers for all your assumed success.

Oh, and congrats to Chris and Scott, too.

Oni notes that “Down Set Fight” is on Comixology right now, but I can’t seem to find the link. We’ll certainly update when it becomes available, but in the meantime keep your eyes open for it.

Update: And here’s that link we promised you. Enjoy.

Oni Press Release

DOWN SET FIGHT, the rollicking tale of two-fisted man-on-mascot mayhem due to hit shelves February 12th, is premiering as a weekly feature on digital comics behemoth ComiXology!

Kicking off TODAY, readers will be able to purchase the thrilling adventures of fallen football star Chuck Fairlane and his cross-country battle against an army of mascots gone mad in a series of six $1.99 installments, ensuring minimal timeouts for those who can’t wait to see the synthetic fur fly.

“Funny, smart, irreverent.” — Scott Snyder (Batman, Superman Unchained, American Vampire, The Wake)

Announced in 2013, the original graphic novel from co-writers Chris Sims and Chad Bowers and artist Scott Kowalchuk has been stirring up excitement with its thrilling take on the classic sports redemption story.

Disgraced and booted from professional football following a scandal, promising superstar Chuck Fairlane has resigned himself to a quiet yet fulfilling life of coaching on the high school gridiron. But when a series of increasingly malevolent mascots begin attacking him out of nowhere, he sets out on a one-man war to restore his integrity, unmask the source at the center of the conspiracy, and destroy a few sports bars along the way; all of this culminating in a battle royale that simply must be seen to be believed.

DOWN SET FIGHT #1 is available NOW from ComiXology.
