Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have found their next Spider-Man according to a story published on Latino Review today. The site is reporting that Asa Butterfield, the star of “Ender’s Game” and “Hugo”, will be the next actor to step into the webslinger’s boots. Although the cast of “Captain America: Civil War” was announced last week, sans Spider-Man, it has been largely rumored that the web-head would make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the summer 2016 blockbuster.

Borys Kit, who writes for the Hollywood Reporter, tweeted after the news was leaked that Butterfield was set to screen test for the role of Peter Parker. Other actors, according to Kit, were also going to test for the part. Also, Kit said that there hasn’t been an offer but Butterfield has “many” standing behind him for the role.

At 18, Butterfield would be the first actual teenager to play the teenage superhero. Tobey Maguire was 26 years old when Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” was released in 2002. Andrew Garfield, who starred in Marc Webb’s reboot, “The Amazing Spider-Man”, was 28 when that 2012 film was released. Marvel has indicated that the MCU Spider-Man will be a teenager and Butterfield definitely looks more the part than his predecessors.

Sony has slotted the summer of 2017 for its next reboot of the franchise, this time in conjunction with Marvel Studios, so it’s pretty clear that things are going to start moving quickly in terms of that film’s production. Sony, dissatisfied with the direction and profits of their Spider-Man franchise, announced earlier this year that they and Marvel Studios would begin working together on producing new Spider-Man films and the character would be appearing in future Marvel Studios films.
