Dark Horse Comics have launched “Overwatch: New Blood,” a new five-part miniseries based on the acclaimed first-person shooter from Blizzard Entertainment, starring the cyborg cowboy Cole Cassidy. Written by Ray Fawkes, with art from Irene Koh, colors by Suzanne Geary, and lettering by Deron Bennett, the series follows Cassidy after he receives a call to rejoin Overwatch, the international peacekeeping task force.

Per the synopsis, “after an unexpected reunion with an old friend, Cassidy considers that maybe Overwatch needs more than the old crew to give it new life,” and sets out to recruit some new heroes. Issue #1 is available now digitally on Dark Horse’s website.

Fawkes is a YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) award winner, best known for his work on titles such as “One Soul” and “Underwinter.” He has previously worked with Dark Horse on “Black Hammer ‘45.” Koh herself worked for the publisher on the “Legend of Korra: Turf Wars” trilogy, with original series co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino.

Longtime Overwatch players may know Cassidy better as Jesse McCree, who was named after a former Blizzard designer. The real McCree was released from the company in August, after California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing filed a lawsuit against Activision Blizzard, alleging a culture of sexual harassment and discrimination. The Overwatch team stated on Twitter they would change the character’s name to “something that better represents what Overwatch stands for.”

“Overwatch: New Blood” #1 (of 5) can be read on Dark Horse Comics’s website.
