Legendary Comics and South Korean digital comics publisher LINE Webtoon have come together for “Pacific Rim: Amara,” a prequel to Pacific Rim Uprising, the forthcoming second film in Legendary’s kaiju movie franchise. The webcomic focuses on Amara Namani, who is played by Cailee Spaeny in the film, and it is written by Cavan Scott (“Doctor Who,” “Vikings”) with Chinese author Zhang Ran (The Windy City) and artist BigN (“Night Owl Bookstore,” “Deep in the Forest”). Here’s the plot synopsis:

As the Kaiju Wars rage on, “Pacific Rim: Amara” follows the young heroine whose life shattered when she is orphaned during a devastating monster attack. Fighting to survive as her city is destroyed, she finds shelter with a grumpy mech-inventor named Kai and his closest companion, Hannah. The trio forms an unlikely family in the aftermath of the invasion, looking out for one another and scavenging old mech parts to build their very own Jaeger, a pilotable giant robot with the power to protect Amara from the monsters that took everything from her.

The first three chapters of “Amara” were released today, and a new one will be added every week on Friday. Pacific Rim Uprising will be released in theaters on March 23, and meanwhile, Legendary Comics’s other prequel, Cavan Scott and Richard Elson’s six-issue “Pacific Rim Aftermath,” will wrap up in comic book stores on June 27.

A special thanks to Bleeding Cool for the heads up.
