No, that’s not the official title.

For those who are as big a fan of Serenity/Firefly as us at Multiversity Comics, you’ll be pleased to know that uber-nerd Patton Oswalt will be writing a new Serenity comic entitled “Serenity: Float Out.” It’s been a long time since Wash was suddenly and brutally impaled by the Reavers, but the scene still remains one of the most powerful moments of the movie, and proof that Joss Whedon shows no mercy to his fans. Now, almost 5 years later, we’re given a goodbye.

From the exclusive interview with MTV Splash Page, Patton said:

“Post-‘Serenity,’ a bunch of Wash’s friends who we haven’t met on the show, they’re basically buying a new ship and christening it,” said Oswalt of how the death of Serenity’s pilot, Wash (played by Alan Tudyk), plays into the comic. “It’s called a ‘float-out’ when you christen a ship.”

“As they’re christening a new ship, they’re telling stories about Wash, and we’re basically seeing what could be the start of a new adventure,” he said.

The book’s interior art is by Patric Reynolds, featuring a cover by “Buffy” artist Jo Chen, and is set for a June release date. I’ve learned not to get my hopes up about Firefly-related comics. But with the recent announcement that the Shepherd Book comic might actually come out sooner rather than later, it looks like Dark Horse will soon be taking their rights with Whedon’s properties seriously.

Needless to say, consider us stoked.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
