Per Popverse, DC Comics have announced “Peacemaker Tries Hard!,” a new, six-issue Black Label series, written by Kyle Starks (“I Hate This Place”) with art by Steve Pugh (“The Flintstones”), and colors by Jordie Bellaire. The comic will follow Peacemaker/Christopher Smith, fresh from serving in the Suicide Squad, as he adopts a cute pug after busting a terrorist ring.
Unfortunately, as the official synopsis explains, “The dog is kidnapped right out from under him by a supervillain who has some very un-superheroic plans for Peacemaker’s brand of ultraviolence. Will he help an infamously unstable super-powered criminal steal the world’s most valuable and dangerous DNA? Honestly, Christopher’s pretty lonely, so it probably just depends on how nicely they ask…”
The book marks the first “Peacemaker” comics series since Paul Kupperberg and Tod Smith’s four-part miniseries from 1988: during the intervening years, the character only starred in other comics like 2021’s “Suicide Squad” run, and last year’s one-shot “Peacemaker: Disturbing the Peace,” written by Garth Ennis with art by Garry Brown.
Its announcement comes a year after the release of the first season of the HBO Max series Peacemaker, overseen by newly appointed DC Studios co-CEO and chairman James Gunn, and starring John Cena. Gunn has stated the show’s second season has been delayed indefinitely by the recently announced DC Studios film/TV slate (which will follow up some of its story threads in the Waller series), so the comic will presumably help tide over fans in the meantime.
“Peacemaker Tries Hard!” #1 will be released on May 2 with covers by Kris Anka, Björn Barends, Eric Battle, Dan Hipp, and Simone di Meo. Head to Popverse to check out their covers, and some interior art until then.
