The solicit’s synopsis reads, “Spanning the years between the hit TV show and today, ‘Pennyworth’ tells the continuing adventures of Alfred Pennyworth as an MI6 counterintelligence agent — this time in Cold War-era Soviet Russia. When Alfred and his partner receive intelligence that nuclear weapons are being manufactured near the Arctic Circle, they’re off to infiltrate the remote military base to learn more. But things don’t go exactly as planned, and the ramifications of this mission may be more far-reaching than anyone could have guessed, as our present-day butler gets dragged back into his past…”
Alfred Pennyworth was created by Don Cameron and Bob Kane, and debuted as Alfred Beagle in May 1943’s “Batman” #16. Although he became an integral part of the Batman mythology (eventually superseding Robin as the Dark Knight’s first ally), and has been the protagonist of various stories exploring his personal history, Alfred has never been the title character of his own comic. The “Pennyworth” comic will also mark the only regular appearances from the character for now, after the death of his mainstream counterpart in Tom King’s “Batman” run.
“Pennyworth” #1 will release on August 10, and retail for $4.99. We’ll have more on DC’s August announcements in our Soliciting Multiversity column next week, and in the meantime, the first two seasons of Pennyworth are currently available to watch via an Epix subscription.
