A while back, Fables scribe Bill Willingham expanded the Fables universe in a way none of us really expected: into that of a full length prose novel. While the character sof the book have only a slight connection to our main heroes from Fables, the writer has been taking every opportunity to expand Fables into the most expansive universe of stories since Veritgo’s Hellblazer, with two Cinderella mini’s by Chris Roberson and a(n ending soon) ongoing starring Jack Horner. Now the book is online and available for all your reading exploits, making it the first comic story to make it outside of digital comic book specific apps (i.e comiXology, etc)! This is also one of the few prose books that is considered a canon part of any ongoing comic series (I do believe, as I am not technically considering the Black Casebook as a prose book considering how much of it is still just a comic).

In case you’re curious about what the book is about in more detail, here’s a clip from the press release:

Based on FABLES, the New York Times bestselling, Hugo Award nominated, Eisner Award winning and one of the longest running comic book series published by Vertigo, PETER & MAX: A FABLES NOVEL tells the dark story of brothers Peter Piper, of Pickled Pepper fame, and Max Piper, the Pied Piper of Hamelin. Willingham deftly weaves an epic tale of good and evil, sibling rivalry, magic, music and a quest for revenge that spans from medieval times to the present day, from the heart of the Black Forest to NYC. Full of vivid detail, imagination and adventure, PETER & MAX illuminates the breadth of Willingham’s knowledge of literature and his true storytelling ability.

You can also read chapters one and two online here and here. If you like it, hop into your favorite digi-library for $9.99, or grab it in stores for a $14.99 paperback. Hopefully this will also put more comics from Vertigo in the e-book libraries, because while comiXology and all related apps are pretty damn great, it’s always nice to get our stories into other people’s spaces.

Hopefully the E-Books won’t arrive upside down.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
