Presumably created by people who have never gotten over the fact that they had to see Gigli or Reindeer Games in theaters, a new petition has been created on Change.org to remove Ben Affleck from the role of Batman that will ultimately go ignored because no one cares about internet petitions.
Created by John Roden, the petition calls into question Affleck’s acting and build:
His acting skill is not even close to being believable as Bruce Wayne and he won’t do the role justice. He’s not built, nor is he intimidating enough for the role of Batman. His portrayal of Daredevil was atrocious and he’s not remotely close to an action star. Please find someone else.
That first sentence really works well if you add an extra bit of Bale growl into the first sentence. What does the role of Batman deserve? Justice.
As of right now the petition has received over 2,000 signatures. I expect a few more to be in there by the time you click the link.
Personally? I think the announcement of Affleck as Batman is great, because I think Batman is a dull character that some fans like to use as a crutch in comics. Affleck is doing a great thing by portraying Batman, because now people will hopefully become less enamored with the Dark Knight and hopefully start checking out other books as the default entry into comics. Sure, there are a lot of good Batman stories, but thanks to Affleck officially sullying the cape for so many people (that aren’t me), it’s an excellent opportunity to remind people that there are plenty of other comics and characters out there.
So Affleck being Batman is, like, the best thing ever.
Because, look: there are only bad options. It’s about finding the best one. And you might be thinking, you don’t have a better bad idea than this? This is the best bad idea they have.
Of course, some of the negative reaction is mindblowing. After all, people were all over Ben’s beard last year when Argo won an Academy Award, and lets be real here: Argo was not that good of a movie. In fact, Argo is probably why you’re getting Batfleck because if anything is more overrated than Argo it’s Batman, so be happy! You won the lottery.
But mostly, it’s all a bit sad. Change.org is supposed to be for things that matter, and I can’t think of anything that matters less than this.
