Before I even say anything, just sit back and enjoy that image. Honestly. Just enjoy.

Ok.

Announced over at Entertainment Weekly as part of their ongoing coverage of CCI (the con formerly known as SDCC), we now have our first look at Dave McKean’s return to the world of “Sandman” via this gorgeous cover. Fans of “Sandman” of course remember the series lush and interesting covers created by McKean as actual 3D pieces of art that were photographed, such as with the cover to issue #2 below:

Which is just awe inspiring. Honestly.

While there was never a lack for self awareness in the book, McKean’s covers gave the book a sense of identity. His multi-format styles and different takes for how to approach the medium offered a unifying and visceral experience to “Sandman” present right at the gate, before you even cross through the doors inside, and having him back on the covers for the new series is reason alone to once again get lost in Gaiman’s magical world of dreams.

While there will certainly be a lot of announcements and images floating around during this comic convention weekend, none are as exciting as the above. At least, not to me — and I’m not even as big a “Sandman” fan as others here at Multiversity.

Still. Seeing this image of Morpheus as he was has created a whole new brand of excitement for “Sandman: Overture” over here, and I can only imagine it will do the same for you.

And, if not, here’s the first page by JH Williams III:

If you weren’t buying it before, you certainly are now, right?

We’ve waited a year to see more from this project after its initial announcement. I’d say the wait was worth it.

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
