VIZ Media revealed that it is adapting author Rainbow Rowell’s popular novel Fangirl into a manga. Adapted by Sam Maggs and illustrated by Gabi Nam, the four-volume series will debut on October 13, 2020. According to Rowell, who has reportedly been working closely with Maggs on the adaptation, the manga will retain the book’s original vibe, but also include new dialogue and, much to fans’ excitement, new Baz and Simon material.

The first volume of “Fangirl” is currently up for pre-order on Viz.com with the following synopsis:

Cath doesn’t need friends IRL. She has her twin sister, Wren, and she’s a popular fanfic writer in the Simon Snow community with thousands of fans online. But now that she’s in college, Cath is completely outside of her comfort zone. There are suddenly all these new people in her life. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming boyfriend, a writing professor who thinks fanfiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome new writing partner … And she’s barely heard from Wren all semester!

Published in 2013, Fangirl has spawned several spin offs, including Carry On, published in 2015 and based on the fanfiction of the same name that main character Cath authors throughout the duration of Fangirl. Most recently, Rowell published Wayward Son, a sequel to Carry On, and has teased a third installation on her Twitter account called Any Way the Wind Blows.

In addition to her young adult novels, Rowell is also the writer for Marvel’s “Runaways” revival series, as well as First Second’s “Pumpkin Heads” with artist Faith Erin Hicks.
