Via Popverse, “The Many Deaths of Laila Starr” writer Ram V and artist Filipe Andrade are reteaming for another supernatural series at BOOM! Studios, “Rare Flavours.” The six-part comic will follow Rubin Baksh, a rakshasa, or shapeshifting demon from Hindu mythology, with a surprising wish: to become a great food and travel writer. To accomplish his dream, he befriends filmmaker Mo, though he keeps him in the dark about his true nature.
Eric Harburn, executive editor of BOOM! Studios, simply said, “Ram and Filipe are a powerhouse of a creative team. Following their modern classic ‘The Many Deaths of Laila Starr,’ return to India for a tale of the fleeting joys of life in the duo’s next masterpiece, ‘Rare Flavours.'” The first issue will be released on September 20, with a main cover by Andrade, and variants by Fabío Moon, David Mack, and another regular collaborator of Ram V, Anand RK, which you can see at Popverse.
In further BOOM! news, the publisher confirmed a second volume of Si Spurrier and Matías Bergara’s post-apocalyptic fantasy series “Coda” will begin on September 27. The sequel to the 2018 comic will continue the story of fallen bard Hum, his Urken (Orc) berserker wife Serka, and their mutant unicorn Nag, as they prepare for a winter in a world where magic is believed to have died – or “so it seems. Prophecies of paradise and the return of magic? Hum is skeptical, while Serka faces difficult moral decisions on the road.”
Spurrier teased “giant crabs and accursed moons and love and religion and kamikaze messenger-fairies and foul-mouthed unicorns and [characters] trying really really really hard not to go on quests. It’s the funnest and most poisonous and best thing to write, ever, and I think it might be our best work yet.” Bergara added, “‘Coda’ has been my absolute favourite book I have ever worked on. I prefer to call it a place, a dimension – one in which a part of me lives day by day in a state of curiosity and discovery. My greatest joy is seeing people reading and entering into this dimension with us.” Head to the press release to check out a preview, and covers by Bergara, Toni Infante, and Nick Dragotta.
