Dynamite Entertainment announced via press release plans to launch a new iteration of their “Red Sonja” series with writer Mark Russell (“The Lone Ranger,” “The Flintstones”) and artist Mirko Colak (“Conan”). The ongoing series will debut in February 2019. This will be Russell’s second Dynamite series after the recently launched “Lone Ranger” mini-series.

Russell and Colak’s take on the character will merge in some ancient history to Red Sonja’s world with the tale of Tomyris, “a world conqueror possessing a massive army and a fatal prophecy.” Russell said of his approach, “I’m a huge fan of ancient history because there’s no clear line where the history ends and legend begins, so in a way, all ancient history is a work of fantasy. I really wanted to write a fantasy title that allowed me to work in some of the incredible stories and themes of ancient history, in particular, the story of Tomyris, the bad-ass Queen of the Steppes, and it’s hard to imagine a better character to tell that story than ‘Red Sonja,’ the bad-ass Queen of Comics.”

Like other big Dynamite debuts, the first issue of “Red Sonja” will feature several different covers by Amanda Conner, Joseph Michael Linsner, Christian Ward, Frank Cho, and a cosplay cover. In addition, there will be a signed “Atlas Edition,” and a blank “Authentix Edition.”
