In an exclusive with ComicBook.com, writer Rick Remender revealed his latest project, “The Scumbag,” out beginning this October at Image Comics. It tells the story of Ernie Ray Clementine, “a profane, illiterate, drug-addicted, biker, with a fifth-grade education.” He also has superpowers thanks to a freak accident, leaving him the world’s top super-spy, who constantly needs to be bribed or baited into doing his job. Of course, there’s a catch: his powers won’t work unless his motivations are noble — a difficult thing to achieve for a terrible person.

“The Scumbag” will feature the work of a different artist each issue, beginning with Lewis Larosa. Future issues will be drawn by Andrew Robinson, Eric Powell, Tula Lotay, Wes Craig, Roland Boschi, Simone Di Meo, Duncan Fegredo, Yanick Paquette, Mike McKone, Dave Johnson, and Moreno Dinisio, who is coloring all the issues. Rus Wooton will provide the lettering.

According to Remender, the story and character are inspired by some of his favorite scumbags: The Big Lebowski, Don Draper, Tony Soprano, Walter White, and early James Bond.

“Basically, what if you gave superhero powers to The Big Lebowski? Or worse? What if the guy who got the superpowers wasn’t a noble person, but a filthy 1970s stoner/biker/metalhead? What if 007’s bosses had to barter with and bribe him to go on missions…? You get the picture,” he explained.
