If you’re like me at all, you’re lamenting this new comic book day. Sure, it’s great that we’re getting an embarrassment of riches to read. But there is one major dark cloud in our clear comic book sky: today is the last issue JH Williams III is handling art duties for Detective Comics.
Since he and Greg Rucka took over Detective it has been one of the best comics on the stands month in and month out. Their story of Kate Kane/Batwoman versus the Religion of Crime has been an incredible one told with genre defining visuals from Williams III. To think that this time next month I won’t get another artistic tour de force of a comic from him…well, today is a sad day indeed (sorry Jock, I love you…but I love Williams III more).
According to CBR’s Robot 6 though, there may be some light at the end of the tunnel. Check after the jump for that information.
Recently a guest on the Word Balloon podcast, Greg Rucka let a certain cat out of the bag that is rather exciting for us Detective fans.
“Jim and I are going to be – I’m probably going to get in trouble for saying this – but we’re starting work on what will be a Batwoman title.” Rucka said on the podcast last night.
Rucka went on to say that the initial plan was for the two of them to handle 12 issues of Detective and then finish their story with the five parts further into 2010, but that plan now appears to be one that will giving us what we always wanted: a more full time Rucka/Williams III collaboration on a Kate Kane book.
While a Kate Kane solo title has been promised before, namely after her incendiary debut in 52 that captured the nation’s attention (not because she was awesome but because she was a lesbian), this one almost assuredly will happen. With the return of Bruce Wayne rapidly approaching and real estate in the Batman titles becoming far more rare, it only makes sense to move Kane out to her own title.
Now that we’ve gotten a taste of their work together, DC likely realizes that we’ll accept no subtitute to Rucka and Williams III on this book. I for one cannot wait until its release. Until then I’ll read their Detective run over and over to help me make it through these trying times.
