Rumor Mill: Hill and Rodriguez on a Marvel One-Shot?

He’d tweeted something to this effect a short time ago, but last night at a book singing in Brookline on his “NOS4A2” book tour, writer Joe Hill was asked about if he had any post-“Locke and Key” writing work in comics for either Marvel or DC, to which ne nodded and said, “One of those companies, yes,” adding that it would be a one-shot and with his “Locke and Key” collaborator Gabriel Rodriguez.

But, the headline says it’s most likely Marvel. Why? Well, two reasons.

First, when asked about why he wanted to write by a young child in the audience, Hill noted it was because he really liked Spider-Man, and that at the age of 12 he’d sent Marvel a Spider-Man story (later growing up to actually write Spider-Man in “Spider-Man Unlimited” #8).

Second, when asked what his favorite Marvel or DC comic was, he noted that “Hawkeye” by Matt Fraction and David Aja is the only cape comic that he’s interested in.

So… seems a bit unlikely that he’ll write for DC, doesn’t it? That and DC doesn’t really do a lot of one-shots — it doesn’t fit the New 52 vibe. What’s a good horror-y Marvel book, though? Maybe something related to “Superior Spider-Man?” That could be horror-esque, and there’s plenty of room for a villainous one-shot.

Another great moment of the evening was when Hill was asked if he ever got flack from other literary folk for writing comics (a job he described as “moonlighting”), to which he responded, “No, because Nail Gaiman.”

Either way, we look forward to whatever it is the duo collaborate on. And if you like Hill’s work in comics, “NOS4A2” (or what I’ve read of it, anyway) is rather great, with excellent spot illustrations by Rodriguez.

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
