Welcome back to The Rundown, our daily breakdown on comic news stories we missed from the previous day. Have a link to share? Email our team at rundown@multiversitycomics.com.
– Wonder Woman is poised to cross yet another benchmark. Patty Jenkins summer blockbuster hit has already surpassed the highest-grossing film directed by a woman, but she may well soon surpass the highest grossing director in the DC Extended Universe. The film has already raked in over $325 million and is likely to soon surpass Zack Snyder’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which earned $330 million worldwide.
– Benevolent Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is once again out and about on the Spider-Man: Homecoming press junket teasing us with things yet to come. Yesterday he let drop the fact that Brian Braddock aka Captain Britain has been bandied about as a possible MCU character and that Marvel has “a lot of actors that come in and ask about that part.” Marvel Studios better act fast because Captain Britain is also a founding member of Excalibur which is an X-Franchise which could also be claimed by FOX studios.
– Feige and Scott Snyder (“All-Star Batman,” “Wytches”) must be reading my dream journal because Snyder teased on Twitter that he has pitched a “Dave McKean art style” Detective Chip book to DC. Detective Chip was created by John Broome (“Elongated Man,” “Flash”) and Carmine Infantino (“Showcase,” “Detective Comics”) in 1952 as a Sheriff’s helpful ape assistant and went on to become the Batman of chimpanzees. DC has neither confirmed nor denied that any Detective Chip comic is in production… yet.
– Riverdale is in the process of casting the pink haired Archie pal Toni Topaz for the show’s second season this fall. The character, who was first introduced in the comics in 2012 in “Jughead Double Digest” #176 is the first bisexual person to appear in Archie Comics. The news came to light after an audition tape of actress Lorelei Linklater (Boyhood, Bomb City) surfaced online.
– If you love DC animated movies then you will be happy to learn that Warner Bros will be putting out a collection of 30 of their best-animated movies on Blu-Ray for their 10th Anniversary. The collection includes the two-part adaptation of Frank Miller’s (“300,” “Daredevil”) classic “The Dark Knight Returns,” in addition to the new Bruce Timm and Sam Liu DC animated original film Batman and Harley Quinn which debuts August 15. The full collection will be available November 7.
– Emerald City Comic Con was the subject of a recent court case which amounted to nearly a half-million dollar payout to convention volunteers. In 2014 the show’s previous owners, Eitane Emerald and the Demonakos family reportedly did not pay the volunteers for their work at the show, which is against the law in Oregon. All of this was prior to ReedPop’s acquisition of the convention in 2016, since then every “volunteer” has been paid.
