Welcome back to The Rundown, our daily breakdown on comic news stories we missed from the previous day. Have a link to share? Email me at david@multiversitycomics.com.
– Speaking of singing young people being cast in things that people care a lot about, “Glee” star Grant Gustin has been cast as The Flash in, at first, “Arrow” and then his own show. He’ll appear in three episodes of this upcoming season of “Arrow” and then heads off to his own series. It’s been confirmed that he’ll be Barry Allen, and Deadline has this little synopsis of his TV origin story:
“Barry Allen (Gustin) is a Central City assistant police forensic investigator who arrives in Starling to look into a series of unexplained robberies that may have a connection to a tragedy in his past. A comic book fan boy, Barry is obsessed with the Arrow unaware that working with Oliver and Felicity to solve the crime has brought him right into the dangerous world of the vigilante. Kreisberg said last month that the actor who portrays Barry Allen will play him as “an ordinary man” when viewers meet him. “The character will be as grounded and realistic as possible,” he said. “That’s how we’ll get to know him. Then his life will get a bit faster.”
– File this one under unexpected: at SPX this past weekend, cartoonists Kate Beaton and Jeff Smith REALIZED THEY WERE RELATED as Beaton revealed in a comic. That is one ridiculously gifted family tree.
– The Ignatz Award winners were announced and cartoonist Michael DeForge dominated, winning Outstanding Comic, Outstanding Artist and Outstanding Anthology. New Yorker cartoonist Liza Donnelly emceed and selected only female cartoonists as awesome people like Lucy Knisley, Rutu Modan and Kate Leth presented.
