Ryan Goes to “Gotham”: Ben McKenzie Cast as Young James Gordon

It looks like “Gotham” has found its James Gordon, as Ben McKenzie (aka Ryan Atwood from “The OC”) has been tapped to play the eventual commissioner of Gotham City.

No other roles have been cast, but showrunner Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist”) has worked with McKenzie in the past on a previously passed on pilot for CBS. Some may scoff that McKenzie got the role as Gordon, mostly due to his prime-time soap opera past, but that’s the very reason why I think he’ll be great. McKenzie, sneakily enough, actually developed into a quality actor, and his work on the show often acted as moody glue to its constantly dramatic world. Not only that, but McKenzie even has DCU experience, having voiced Bruce Wayne/Batman in the animated adaptation of “Batman: Year One”.

Really looking forward to seeing this show come together, and it seems that it is off to a fine start. Here’s hoping that some street tough opens the pilot by punching Gordon and following with “Welcome to Gotham, BITCH!” just to bring the whole thing full circle.
