Sam Glanzman, artist at DC, Marvel, and Charlton, has passed away at age 92. Glanzman consistently worked in the industry since the early Golden Age, with his most recent work appearing in the 2012 “Joe Kubert Presents” anthology.
Soon after entering the industry, Glanzman left to fight in World War II. His experiences serving in the Navy on the U.S.S. Stevens would later go on to inspire some of his most famous work. His war work ran in war comics anthologies at Charlton and DC Comics up through the 1970s, including a biographical feature titled “U.S.S. Stevens.” Below is an original page from the feature:

Glanzman spent a large chunk of his career at Charlton Comics, where he created a number of war comics and a well-regarded series based on the mythological character Hercules. His oevure also includes numerous contributions to Western and Horror anthology titles which were, like his war comics work, most prominently found up through the 1970s.
Though never a household name, Glanzman is nonetheless remembered by fans of genre comics anthologies and industry professionals for his storytelling prowess and exciting, human stories.
Glanzman is survived by his wife, Sue, who has started a GoFundMe page here. The funds raised will go towards producing a tribute book, to be titled “Sam Glanzman Forever,” as well as supporting Sue during this difficult time.
