After a very short respite, IDW is bringing Samuri Jack back to comics. On the heels of the recently wrapped up 10-episode revival of Genndy Tartakovsky’s(Star Wars: Clone Wars, Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack TV show comes “Samurai Jack: Quantum Jack” written by Fabian Rangel Jr. (“Namwolf,” “Space Riders”) with art by Warwick Johnson Cadwell (“Tank Girl,” “Helena Crash”).

As the title indicates, the series will thrust Jack into a time-hopping adventure filled with alternate realities instead of timelines after Jack is zapped with experimental Quantum Ray. His memories have been erased, but his spirit remains intact much like the recent episodes of the show. The Samurai Jack character is no stranger to comics, having just wrapped up a prior volume at IDW (written by Jim Zub and illustrated by original character designed Andy Suriano) this Spring.

Excitement and respect for the charecter are clearly evident in the comments shared by the creative team. As Fabian Rangel Jr. puts it, “I’m beyond thrilled to be working on new Samurai Jack comics. Samurai Jack is a huge influence on my storytelling…I think fans of the show will dig what Warwick and I have been cooking up!” Warwick Johnson Cadwell also followed up the announcement with “Samurai Jack has been an inspiration and constant source of encouragement for me since I first saw it, in terms of art, narrative, and just plain enjoyment.”

The debut issue, hitting shelved this September, will also feature variant covers by artists Michael Avon Oeming (“Powers”), Alexis Zirritt (“Space Riders”). and Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky. I think it is safe to say that this prized property is in good hands based on the fantastic work Rangel Jr. and Johnson Cadwell have been putting out lately. As a fan, I cannot help but get a little extra excited thinking about the new places this story will take on of my favorite characters of all time.
