This Saturday is one of my favorite holidays of the year, and it isn’t even a widely spread holiday – it’s like a comic book Christmas, and it’s name is Free Comic Book Day.
Free Comic Book Day is just what it sounds like, as most of the major comic book publishers produce special comics for the first Saturday of this May, which in this case is Saturday, May 1st. There are all kinds of reasons to go…many big creators will be signing, lots of big sales in conjunction, and then the comics! Check out the link above for a list of all of the comics, where the big events are, previews of the comics, and a lot more.
Some of the comics I’m excited for this year include:
- Marvel’s Iron Man/Thor by Matt Fraction and John Romita Jr.
- Dark Horse’s Doctor Solar/Magnus from Jim Shooter and Dennis Calero
- Archaia’s Mouse Guard/Fraggle Rock flip book from David Petersen and others
- Drawn and Quarterly’s YOW! The John Stanley Library FCBD 2010 Edition from Seth and John Stanley
- DC’s War of the Supermen from James Robinson, Eddy Barrows, Ruy Jose (cover by JG Jones)
- Boom’s Irredeemable/Incorruptible flip book from Mark Waid, Peter Krause, Jean Diaz
- Top Cow’s Artifacts #0 by Ron Marz and various artists
- Oni Press’ Oni Free For All by Chris Schweizer, Matthew Loux, Ray Fawkes
- Red 5’s Atomic Robo from Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegener
- Th3rd World Studios’ The Stuff of Legend: Mortal Instruments from Mike Raicht, Brian Smith, and Charles Paul Wilson III
Don’t forget to go to your local store on Monday – odds are there are fun events at comic stores nationwide, and at the very least there are sweet, free comics. While you’re at it, pick something new up. Just because they are free for you doesn’t mean they are free for your store…support your local comic book store and buy something cool and new!
