SDCC ’11 Rumor Mill: Is Nick Spencer Writing That Defenders Book?

Ok, so we know that Marvel is releasing some kind of new Defenders book – or something that features a version of what appears to be the Defenders. We don’t know much else about it other than that it will come out (assumedly) after Fear Itself and that it will feature Hulk, Red She-Hulk, Silver Surfer, Iron Fist, and Doctor Strange.

Here’s where it gets fun and speculative (WARNING: SPOILERS FOR IRON MAN 2.0 #7): in the latest Iron Man 2.0 by Spencer that ties into Fear Itself, Doctor Strange reveals that the new fancy white suit that Iron Fist is sporting these days actually makes him an Immortal Weapon of Agamotto. The issue also features Iron Fist being possessed by an unseen enemy before Rhodey takes him down, and the final issue teases “Iron Fist’s Story Will Continue…” Given that these teasers say “It’s Either In You Or It’s Not”, it’s worth noting that something – or someone? – is definitely in Iron Fist.

Now – Iron Fist got his fancy new white suit in New Avengers written by Brian Bendis, but Spencer is the one that pulled the Agamotto reveal, so it’s plausible that (given that the two work together in the Ultimate Universe) Bendis and Spencer are trading stories/plot points back and forth. Given that whatever this new “Defenders” book is features both Strange and Iron Fist in it, it’s plausible to believe that a) it will pick up the story threads from the first arc of the second volume of New Avengers and Fear Itself: Iron Man 2.0 and b) that Nick Spencer, the writer of every comic ever these days, is helming it.

Only time will tell. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears to the ground for the eventual announcement.
