Hot on the heels of the success of “Black Panther”, Marvel has announced a new companion series, “World of Wakanda”.

The first issue of “Black Panther” has sold (reportedly) over 300,000 copies for Marvel, so with that kind of success, it’s a no brainer that they would launch a second series. Releasing later this year, the first arc of “World of Wakanda” will show how former Dora Milaje Ayo and Aneka left the force and fell in love. The series will be written by first time comic scribe but revered feminist writer Roxane Gay and poet Yona Harvey. This story will be drawn by Alitha Martinez.Included in the first issue will be a 10 page story by “Black Panther” writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and Harvey about Znezi, the person who started the riot seen in the first issue of “Black Panther. This one shot will be drawn by Afua Richardson who also drew the cover for the first issue. Coates will oversee the project and write short stories as the series goes on.

This is incredibly exciting and a great move on the part of Marvel. Comic books are becoming more mainstream but writers like Coates and Gay have the kind of reach that comic books don’t have. “World of Wakanda” will also be one of the very few comic books at Marvel and DC that tells the story of women of color as told by women of color. It’s an understatement to say that this is a big deal. I’m excited to get this book in my hands.
