SDCC 2016: Marvel Studios Panel Confirms Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Debuts New Doctor Strange Trailer, and More

After months of speculation that this would be the case, Marvel Studios made it official tonight: Brie Larson will play Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, on the silver screen.

There have been some legitimate criticism of this rumor, for the simple fact of how young Danvers will be in the films, as opposed to the more veteran character she is in the comics. While I can appreciate that, Larson is a fantastic actress, who brings a strength and a heart to her characters, and so I am legitimately excited about what she can bring to the role. Plus, for those of us who have been fans since 21 Jump Street and Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World, it is nice to see her balancing both the Oscar-winning dramatic work with continued fun films.

Larson’s casting was the biggest news of the night, although there were lots of other interesting bits of information from the panel, which included:

– A new Doctor Strange trailer, seen below:

– A new Marvel Studios logo and fanfare (significant because, if rumors are to be believed, the studio and the publisher are working together less than ever before, and the new logo definitely is less inspired by the comics logo than the previous iteration).

– Confirmation that Michael B. Jordan is playing Erik Killmonger in Black Panther, and that the film starts shooting in January.

– The reveal that Kurt Russell is playing not just Starlord’s father in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but that his father is…EGO THE LIVING PLANET! Oh, and Sylvester Stallone is in the film, too.

– Confirmation that Michael Keaton, Donald Glover, and more are part of the Spider-Man: Homecoming cast.

Tonight was yet another reminder of just how much Marvel has going on, film wise right now. As always, stay tuned for more Marvel Studios news as it breaks.
