Sean Phillips Goes to The Dark Tower

For me, Marvel’s adaptation of Stephen King’s Dark Tower series has mostly been one based around my appreciation of the art. While four of the arcs have been astoundingly well illustrated by Jae Lee with the aid of Richard Isanove, the fourth mini The Fall of Gilead was found lacking by yours truly. While Isanove’s work was incredible as an accent to Lee’s phenomenal pencils, handling all artistic duties exposed flaws in his work.

Thankfully, for the upcoming mini titled Dark Tower: The Gunslinger we will see a new primary artist for Isanove to aid as Lee pursues projects unknown. That penciller is none other than Sean Phillips, famed artist of such titles as Criminal, Sleeper, and even Marvel Zombies.

This announcement makes me far more excited for the title. If we’re not going to have Jae Lee working on the book, Phillips is a more than satisfying substitute. While Lee’s work may fit better overall, Phillips has the grasp of the atmosphere and the shadowy work necessary for a series of this sort. Plus, that cover above is freaking gorgeous!

Check out the announcement from Marvel’s May solicits after the jump.
