When Sebastian Stan went in to test for Marvel’s upcoming The First Avenger: Captain America, it was to play Steve Rogers…Captain America himself. When Chris Evans was cast as the lead, all the other contenders were likely disappointed…besides Stan. He was cast today as Bucky Barnes, Rogers’ teenage sidekick and a character who eventually returns as first a brainwashed Russian assassin known as the Winter Soldier and eventually becomes the next Captain America. That Stan evidently signed a five or six picture deal possibly indicates that this modern turn for the character may come to pass even in the movies.
Stan is likely most well known for his roles in NBC’s Kings and The CW’s Gossip Girl, but he also was in the recent comedy Hot Tub Time Machine as a Red Dawn obsessed ski patrol member. Besides that role (in which he was pretty damn funny), I don’t really know Stan, but I get the feeling this could end up being a sneaky good casting. If you need a better indicator than my intuition, note the fact auteur Darren Aronofsky cast Stan in his upcoming film “Black Sawn.”
