AHOY Comics has announced that a sequel to 2019’s controversial “Second Coming” mini-series, titled “Second Coming: Only Begotten Son,” will release later in 2020.
Solicitation copy accompanying the announcement confirms the return of the original writer, Mark Russell, and artists Richard Pace and Leonard Kirk, and further reads: “The savior and the superhero return for a new round of shared adventures –– but first we turn back time to witness the interplanetary origin of Sunstar! Warning: portrays science denial, mass extinction, and real estate sales!”
Russell stated, “Whether it’s dumping all the problems we’ve created on the post-millennial generation, Sunstar and Sheila having a baby, or the Son of God trying to reclaim the religion that was named after him, ‘Second Coming: Only Begotten Son’ is about how children are our attempt to fix the world.”
Readers may recall that the first “Second Coming” series was originally going to be published by DC’s venerable Vertigo imprint, during its 25th anniversary relaunch in 2018. Controversy soon found the unreleased (and therefore unread) title in the form of a CitizenGO petition objecting to its “inappropriate and blasphemous” portrayal of Jesus Christ (which is protected speech under the U.S. Constitution), who returns to modern-day Earth as the sidekick of superhero Sunstar.
That controversy proved too hot for DC, who canceled all orders and released the book back to its creators, who then took it to AHOY Comics, where it ran for six issues.
“Second Coming: Only Begotten Son” #1 will be released on December 16, 2020.
