On the heels of last year’s successful first round, DC Comics has announced a second round of Hanna Barbera/DC Universe crossovers coming this May. While the first round focused on the characters most associated with Hanna Barbera in the 1960s, this new round focuses on the characters that were more associated with the 1970s. The full creative teams and character pairings were revealed via press release earlier today; the event will feature:
“Aquaman/Jabber Jaw Special” by Dan Abnett, Paul Pelletier, and Andrew Hennessey.
The most natural pairing of the four announced titles, this was hinted as having another set of Hanna Barbera characters that feature prominently, according to a CBR interview with Dan DiDio.
“Black Lightning/Hong Kong Phooey Special” by Bryan Hill, Denys Cowan, and Bill Sienkiewicz.
DiDio acknowledged the similarity to the Power Man/Iron Fist “Heroes for Hire” series, and mentioned how this is set squarely in the 1970s.
“The Flash/Speed Buggy Special” by Scott Lobdell, Brett Booth, and Norm Rapund.
Lobdell’s ‘Reverse Speed Buggy’ pitch was what sold DiDio on including the titular Buggy in this round of crossovers.
“Super Sons/Dynomutt Special” by Peter Tomasi, Fernando Pasarin, and Oclair Ablert.
DiDio denied that this will be Tomasi’s last Damian/Jon story for the time being, which reinforces comments that Tomasi made around the announcement of its cancellation.
In addition, there will be back ups in both the “Aquaman/Jabberjaw” and “Black Lightning/Hong Kong Phooey” books, both by Jeff Parker and Scott Kollins, featuring Captain Caveman, The Spectre and the wizard Shazam in the aquatic title, and Jason Blood and the Funky Phantom in the 1970s set book.
The initial round of crossovers included “Green Lantern/Space Ghost,” “Suicide Squad/Banana Splits,” “Adam Strange/Future Quest,” and “Booster Gold/The Flintstones.”
DC is currently publishing a few Hanna-Barbera books, including the ongoings “Future Quest Presents” and “Scooby Apocalypse,” as well as “The Jetsons” and “Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles” miniseries.

Four New One-Shots Team Up Heroes of the DC Universe with Popular Characters from ’1970s-Era H-B Cartoons

Today, the publisher announced plans to release four all-new one-shot comics that bring some of DC’s most exciting heroes together with well-known characters from the world of Hanna-Barbera cartoons from the 1970’s. These books will be available at comic book retailers and for purchase digitally on May 30.

AQUAMAN/JABBERJAW SPECIAL #1
In a story written by Aquaman writer Dan Abnett with art and by Paul Pelletier and Andrew Hennessey, the town of Amnesty Island is besieged by a series of shark attacks, and the authorities call Aquaman for help! What’s unusual about this case is that the shark isn’t trying to kill people—he just wants to talk to them. All Jabberjaw wants is to get back to Aqualand, the future undersea utopia where he came from. But that peaceful city where man and sentient sea life have been living in harmony has been turned into a dystopian nightmare created by a new Ocean Master! Now the King of Atlantis and his friendly shark ally must team up to set things right.
