DC Comics have announced “The Secret Spiral of Swamp Kid,” a new middle-grade graphic novel for their DC Zoom imprint. The younger-audience targeted reimagining of Swamp Thing will be written and drawn by Kirk Scroggs, whose previous work includes the Wiley & Granpa Creature FeaturesTales of a Sixth-Grade Muppet, and Snoop Troop series.

The book is told from the perspective of Russell Weinwright (a nod to Swamp Thing co-creator Len Wein), a middle school student with “algae for hair and a tree trunk for a right arm.” The story unfolds via drawings in Russell’s spiral notebook–not unlike “My Favorite Thing is Monsters.” Scroggs explained the narrative device saying, “My hope is that the format will make kids realize, ‘Hey, maybe I can make my own comic book! I’ve got a spiral notebook, I’ve got my markers, I’ve got my pencils, I’ve got all the tools!’ It has that sense of wish fulfillment.”

DC Zoom is one of DC Comics’s new imprints, targeting middle-grade readers with standalone original graphic novels. The line is set to launch in April 2019 with “Super Sons: The Polarshield Project” by Ridley Pearson and Ile Gonzalez.

“The Secret Spiral of Swamp Kid” will be released on October 1, later this year. The Hollywood Reporter has an interview with Scroggs and a preview of some of the artwork.
