This summer, Vault Comics will launch “Sera and the Royal Stars” from writer Jon Tsuei (“Bitch Planet: Triple Feature”) and artist Audrey Mok (“Betty & Veronica”). Joining Tsuei and Mok will be colorist Raul Angulo (“Angel”), letterer Jim Campbell (“Firefly”), and designer Tim Daniel (“Rat Queens”). The series will focus on a princess’s quest to put the stars back in the heavens.

Vault’s official synopsis reads “Civil war rages in the Empire of Parsa, and famine has struck. As the seasons refuse to turn, Princess Sera receives a vision from the deity Mitra telling her to find the Royal Stars and restore them to the heavens. Despite her kingdom and her troops’ need of her command, Sera embarks on a quest to find the fallen stars—now trapped on earth—and save her people from dearth and death.”

In a statement, Vault Editor-in-Chief Adrian Wassel says “‘Sera and the Royal Stars’ is the kind of fantasy story we (and I do mean all of us—creators, editors, publishers, retailers) were told for years was too grand in scope to market in comics. Which, of course, was absolute nonsense.” He continues, saying, “High fantasy, epics of all sorts, aren’t too grand for the medium. That’s absurd. They’re just really dang difficult to make well.” That’s where “Sera and the Royal Stars” comes in, with Wassel going on to say that the book is a high fantasy “quest blending dozens of Asian mythologies that somehow made me feel like I was re-watching my favorite episodes of Avatar, while re-reading my favorite issues of ‘Monstress,’ with a hero I cared about so deeply I was twelve again.”

“Sera and the Royal Stars” #1 will go on sale July 24, 2019.
