Marvel Studios have released the first trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Simu Liu as the Master of Kung-Fu:
The trailer is narrated by Tony Leung as Shang-Chi’s father Wenwu, aka the real Mandarin, the ancient leader of the Ten Rings organization that kidnapped Tony Stark in the first Iron Man film, and who was impersonated by AIM’s decoy Tony Slattery (Ben Kingsley) in Iron Man 3. Wenwu is disappointed his son has chosen a normal life, and wants him to assume his place at his side.
The trailer also introduces Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend and fellow hotel employee Katy, who is understandably baffled when he reveals his fighting prowess against a pair of thugs on public transport, as well as an array of martial arts foes, creatures, and settings in futuristic, modern, and ancient locations — and of course, the Ten Rings themselves, which appear to have been reinterpreted for the Marvel Cinematic Universe as arm bracelets.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be released in theaters on September 3, 2021. It will be preceded by Black Widow, which will have a dual theatrical and Disney+ Premier Access release on July 9. Until then, you can also check out an exclusive first look at Entertainment Weekly, featuring photos, and comments by Cretton and more on bringing the MCU’s first Asian hero to the big screen.
