Sony Pictures Classics have released the trailer for Shortcomings, the comedy-drama film based on Adrian Tomine’s 2007 graphic novel, adapted by Tomine himself, and directed by Randall Park (in his feature directorial debut.)
The movie follows Ben (The Umbrella Academy‘s Justin H. Min), a filmmaker who runs an arthouse theater in Berkeley, California, who separates from his girlfriend Miko (Ally Maki), when she leaves for an internship in New York. Despite going on a rebound with the white, blonde Sasha (Debby Ryan), Ben is shocked to discover Miko was apparently lying to him.
The movie also co-stars Sherry Cola (Joy Ride) as Ben’s best friend, Alice, who embarks on a relationship with Meredith (Sonoya Mizuno); plus Jacob Batalon and Scott Seiss as Ben’s colleagues Gene and Lamont; the Gossip Girl revival’s Tavi Gevinson as Autumn, the movie theater’s newest employee; and Veep‘s Timothy Simons as Leon, a fashion designer who gets romantically involved with Miko. Stephanie Hsu, Ronny Chieng, and Park himself also make cameo appearances in the film.
Shortcomings premiered earlier this year at Sundance to largely positive reviews (currently boasting an 80 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 40 reviews), and will be released in theaters on August 4. In the meantime, you can check out the poster and a picture gallery on the official website.
