In news strangely under-announced, it looks like Si Spurrier has his next book over at BOOM! now that “Extermination” is done all locked up: “Six-Gun Gorilla.”

A relaunch of an old pulp character from the 30’s about a gorilla in the old West, Spurrier and artist Jeff Stokely will be launching from BOOM! Studios in June, as revealed on Spurrier’s site, with a cover by Ramon Perez. However, Spurrier insists its about more than just a gorilla in a stetson:

Part of what made Six Gun Gorilla so enticing to me – besides all those conflicting layers of absurdity and awesome – is that the maestro who wrote all those original stories was never named. Nobody knows who he or she was. That plays so deliciously into the mythos of The Western as a trope – as a thing responsible for its own legend – and it’ll come as no surprise that on the acknowledgement page for this series, right beside Jess’s name, you’ll find a dedication to “[CREATORS UNKNOWN]”.

Those whose works outlived their names.

New Six Gun Gorilla plays with a lot of these themes. It’s hugely involved in the processing of legend and story. There’s more than a little meta strangeness in there – as you’d expect from yours truly. Also: heads being exploding and guys crawling across wastelands. Some cliches exist for a reason.

Look for solicits later this week and the book to launch in June.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
