Dynamite Comics have announced a new “Death-Defying ‘Devil” mini-series will be launching in August, with writer Gail Simone (“Birds of Prey”), artist Walter Geovani (“Red Sonja”), colorist Adriano Augusto (“Red Sonja/Tarzan”) and letterer Simon Bowland (“Red Sonja”) making up the creative team. For those who aren’t familiar with the character, the ‘Devil is a Golden Age hero who was revived in Jim Kruger and Alex Ross’s 2008 series “Project Superpowers.”

“Death-Defying ‘Devil” will follow the ‘Devil as he finds himself beaten outside an apartment building, only to be taken in by a group of tenants from inside the building. Each tenant that is involved will be explored in-depth, with each of them having their own problems that the ‘Devil wants to solve, even if one of his new neighbors is a traitor. Meanwhile, the ‘Devil slowly discovers that there is a strange force affecting the entirety of the building.

In an interview with Previews World, Simone recalled how she became “fascinated” with the ‘Devil after she “first saw him on the cover of Jim Steranko’s History of Comics,” and after having chance to read some of his stories, now describes him as a “precursor to the modern street-level heroes we have today.” For Geovani, this series marks his latest collaboration with Simone, whom he said working with “is always a pleasure and an honor,” as well as his debut drawing superheroes. Editor Kevin Ketner said that he is looking forward to “getting a lot deeper into this character” with the creative team, while Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher, stated the ‘Devil is one of his favorite characters at the company, and that the reunion of Simone and Geovani, as well as this being his first superhero comic “sealed the deal” for this being an “exciting series.”

“Death Defying ‘Devil” #1 is scheduled for release in August. The first issue of the series will have multiple variant covers from a host of artists including Alex Ross (“The World’s Greatest Super-Heroes”), Riccardo Federici (“Aquaman”) and Tyler Kirkham (“Deathstroke”).
