Writer/artist Sina Grace (“Iceman,” “Ghosted in LA”) is crafting a young adult take on the Man of Steel for the upcoming graphic novel “Superman: The Harvests of Youth.” Announced today at San Diego Comic-Con during DC’s ‘Comics Are Fun For Everyone’ panel, the coming-of-age book follows a teenage Clark Kent as he grapples with some weighty issues, from “the mortality of his friends and family,” to “the seductive nature of online subcultures built around hate and anger.”
DC’s press release for the announcement teases the conflicting feelings Clark must balance in his youth, with the pressure and fear that comes from growing up playing against the joy of soaring through the sky. The book’s supporting cast features “Superman” mainstays like Lana Lang as well as new characters.
Grace will provide both writing and art for the graphic novel, with colors coming from Cris Peter (“Casanova”). Grace has been building a steady list of DC credits in recent years, contributing stories for 2021’s “DC Pride,” “Sensational Wonder Woman,” “Wonder Woman: Black and Gold,” and “DC Love is a Battlefield,” as well as the two-issue backup feature ‘Gotham Girl Interrupted’ in the pages of “Detective Comics” this year.
The ‘Comics Are Fun For Everyone’ panel also featured a preview of “Blue Beetle: Graduation Day” from writer Josh Trujillo and artist Adrián Gutierréz. A runner-up from last year’s inaugural DC Round Robin tournament, the series follows Jaime Reyes as his high school graduation approaches, as he balances his responsibilities as a hero with deciding what’s best for his future. Trujillo shared preview art from the series, and revealed that the comic will introduce a new beetle color with the Yellow Beetle, and a new location called Palmera City.
“Superman: The Harvests of Youth” takes flight on October 3, 2023. No release date was announced for “Blue Beetle: Graduation Day,” but you can check out the preview art below.
