Skybound announces today the new title “Redneck,” from writer Donny Cates, artist Lisandro Estherren, colorist Dee Cunniffe, and letterer Joe Sabino, due out in April. It follows a family of Texas vampires who run the local barbeque joint and live off cow’s blood. All that changes as a long standing feud comes to a violent, bloody head. From the way things look, it seems almost like a version of the Hatfields and the McCoys, except one side is a bunch of vampires.
Donny Cates is definitely a rising star in comics right now, successfully turning some “Dark Horse Presents” shorts and the Dark Horse mini “Buzzkill” into a full fledged career over the last few years. “Redneck” actually makes his second Image book, with the recently released “God Country” being the first. The shift to Image books could be seen as a big step in his career, given the status that Image has in the industry today. Artist Lisandro Estherren may not be the most recognizable name, with Boom!’s “Last Contract” as a recent credit, but the art shown for “Redneck” looks pretty great so far. The two of them together, along with the general quality of books that Skybound and Image have, makes “Redneck” look pretty promising. The “redneck” joke in the title also isn’t too bad. Not to mention, the fact that it’s set in the South and written by a Southerner makes this Southerner all the more interested in it.
