During last night’s MTV Movie & TV Awards, Paramount Pictures released a minute-long trailer for Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, the movie reboot starring Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians) as the iconic ninja:
While brief, the trailer shows the film will provide a backstory for Snake Eyes much closer to the one in Larry Hama’s “G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero” run than 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, with Snake Eyes joining the Arashikage ninja clan after Tommy (Storm Shadow, played by Warrior‘s Andrew Koji) offers him the opportunity to make something of himself. (While not mentioned here, it has been confirmed the movie will reveal Snake Eyes’s real name.)
The trailer also introduces Peter Mensah (Spartacus) as Blind Master, Haruka Abe (Kiss Me First) as Akiko, and Samara Weaving (Bill & Ted Face the Music) as G.I. Joe member Scarlett, seen here locking aim with her Cobra counterpart, Úrsula Corberó (Money Heist)’s Baroness. Paramount also released a behind-the-scenes feature that gives us a glimpse of Indonesian actor and martial artist Iko Uwais (The Raid, Wu Assassins) as Arashikage instructor Hard Master:
Directed by Robert Schwentke (Red, the Divergent series) from a screenplay by Evan Spiliotopoulos, Anna Waterhouse and Joe Sharpnel, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins releases in theaters on July 23. At the time of writing, it is unclear if the film will, like other 2021 releases from Paramount, be added to the Paramount+ streaming service 45 days (September 6) after its theatrical release.
