So What Is the Guardians of the Globe Book REALLY?

All week long we’ve had these silly little ads about Guardians of the Globe, and many people have been wondering if this is a real book or not. Invincible and Spawn seemed like an unlikely but doable pairing, but Rick Grimes, Obama, and Harry Potter? Not so much. So while all of us had kept our fingers crossed, we didn’t think that this book was coming anymore for real.

However, over at Comic Book Resources, Kirkman gave us the word: it’s legit. There will in fact be a Guardians of the Globe book in August 2010, it just won’t feature the rag tag crew of our nation’s president and that boy wizard. In fact, we won’t find the REAL cast until next week, but Kirkman does promise it will be legit.

So what’s the skinny? Well, it’ll start off as a six issue story for Kirkman to explore outside events of the upcoming Viltrumite War. Invincible will be in space for 8 issues and the book won’t feature his supporting cast. That’s where the mini comes in. It’ll feature the team (assumedly the one currently assembled in the book), and it’ll be the Viltrumite War’s companion piece. At the end of it, it’ll either spin off into a full series or continue to be a series of mini’s for whenever Kirkman needs a tie-in to Invincible. He hasn’t decided yet, but the possibilities are out there.

For more on the book, be sure to check out the interview at CBR. He also explains his take on what is going on between the big two right now, and explains why he chose to announce this book the way he did. It’s nice that we are getting the first real branch off from Invincible, though (not counting Capes). All of us at MC are pretty stoked.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
