SDCC ’17: “Sonic the Hedgehog” Moving to IDW in 2018

SEGA has found a new home for “Sonic the Hedgehog” comics at IDW Publishing after ending its over 20 year publishing relationship with Archie Comics earlier this week. Sega and IDW’s new partnership could see new Sonic comics as early as 2018. While no creative teams have been announced at this time, IDW and SEGA are currently searching for writers and artists to bring their talents to the Sonic world. Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer added, ““We’ve been speaking with beloved Sonic fan-favorite creators and new creators alike, and are excited to be able to spread specifics about our plans for the comic in the near future.”

The original “Sonic the Hedgehog” title began in 1992 and ran for 290 issues at Archie Comics and ended back in April. The comic was written originally by Michael Gallagher, then Ken Penders, and eventually Ian Flynn before it was cancelled. It is unclear if IDW will keep the original numbering for the series, which helped “Sonic the Hedgehog” become the longest running comic based on a video game. The publisher has a history though of keeping the original numberings from other licensed titles. Archie had also announced a 25th anniversary special called “Sonic Mega Drive: Overdrive,” and it is unclear if IDW will celebrate this 25 year milestone.

“We are ecstatic about this partnership with IDW,” Ivo Gerscovich, Chief Brand Officer for Sonic the Hedgehog, said. “We know they’ll serve as a good home for the new adventures of Sonic, his friends, and foes.”
