Snoopy and the rest of the “Peanuts” gang have found a new home at Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) according to Deadline. Sony has taken a 39% stake in “Peanuts,” holding for $185 million. Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc. will buy 49 percent of the 80 percent previously owned by DHX Media, the Canada-headquartered kids’ company.

While Sony has vested a lot of money into the IP, DHX Media will still have an overall 41% stake in “Peanuts,” while the estate of Charles M. Schulz, the creator of “Peanuts,” will continue to own 20%.

Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony’s new CEO took over the reigns from Kaz Hirai on April 1, and this marks his first entertainment acquisition since he began. There was much speculation that Yoshida valued entertainment less than Hirai, but this move makes sense for Yoshida’s goal in generating revenue in the long term, considering the success the Peanuts film had, in 2015, grossing $250,474,038 worldwide.

Michael Donovan, Executive Chair and CEO of DHX Media said “We are honoured to deepen our relationship with Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) as we continue our expansion of ‘Peanuts’ globally. Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) has incredible expertise in rights management across the entertainment and consumer products industries, having successfully grown the ‘Peanuts’ business in Japan over 200% since they became our agent in 2010.”

“Peanuts” is a syndicated daily and Sunday American comic strip written and illustrated by Schulz that ran from October 2, 1950, to February 13, 2000, and which has had Christmas, Halloween and many other TV specials and films over the years.
