Speculation: Is Nova Leaving The Secret Avengers?

Those of you who read your comics yesterday will note that the first arc of Secret Avengers has wrapped up. The first Big Bad is stopped, Steve Rogers kicks some epic ass, and a great tease is put in place for both a series-running conspiracy as well as next issue topic. However, one thing that fans of this book have noticed is that Nova makes an odd choice for an Avenger. Why? Well, he’s the leader of the Nova Corps, houses the World Mind in his helmet, and is currently involved in the Thanos Imperative arc.

So what’s going on with that? How are the continuity elements lining up? In this week’s issue, Ed Brubaker did quietly address that in a line of dialogue that is pretty intriguing. For those wondering how Nova balances his time, it’s mentioned in the end of the issue that Nova received a distress call from the Guardians and was forced to leave (to Thanos Imperative/fighting the Cancerverse). Well, that wraps up continuity issues – I suppose this issue happens literally between the cracks of where Nova ended and Thanos Imperative started.

What is more of note is that Sharon Carter mentions she’ll begin doing research on “other cosmic-level heroes” because Nova is, to quote Steve Rogers, “(un)available enough as a resource.” So for those who were confused about Nova being a part of the book, it looks like he could be gone after this first arc. But who is going to take his place?

With the Thanos Imperative assumedly leaving epic devastation on the cosmic Marvel U, I suppose it’s safe to assume there’s a spot open on the Secret Avengers for a cosmic-level superhero. With a rumored Cosmic Avengers in the works featuring Nova as a lead (assuming he’s alive at the end of the story), who do you think could come in to the Secret Avengers and replace him? Let us know in the comments!

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
