Marvel’s Spider-verse is about to get a bit bigger, it seems.

After yesterday’s tease that the whole Superior Spider-Man thing may be coming to an end sooner rather than later, Marvel’s turned around and revealed “Superior Foes of Spider-Man,” a villain-based ongoing coming in July. Written by Nick Spencer and illustrated by Steve Lieber,  the book stars the new Secret Six comprised of Boomerang, Shocker, Speed Demon, the Beetle and Overdrive as they try to evolve from a criminal gang to something much bigger. Spencer promises that the book will have a working-class focus, with the villains being much more personalized than they usually are (paying alimony, dealing with loan sharks).

The odd name aside, the creative team of this book is pretty dynamite. Nick Spencer writing a villain book? Nailed it. Steve Lieber illustrating anything? Sold. The book has the feeling of a Rogues book, and the few that DC have published of those have been pretty stellar. Now an ongoing starring a Marvel equivalent? This definitely worth a look.

“Superior Foes of Spider-Man” launches in July.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
