Marvel’s dystopic future, and its most prolific hero Spider-Man 2099, turns 30 this year, and Marvel will launch the miniseries “Spider-Man 2099: Exodus” to celebrate the anniversary. The series is written by Steve Orlando (“Marauders,” “Midnighter”) with art by Paul Fry, David Wachter, Marco Castiello, Ze Carlos, Alessandro Mircola, and Kim Jacinto.

The story begins with the one-shot “Spider-Man 2099: Exodus – Alpha” #1, where a Celestial crashes to Earth, and Miguel O’Hara, the Spider-Man of the future, begins traveling the universe to find the best way to harness this twist of fate. “Spider-Man 2099: Exodus” #1 promises to introduce us to the Winter Soldier of the future, a young woman dubbed Winter Soldier 13 by her masters in The Cabal, while issue #2 takes readers to the last survivors of Asgard’s Ragnarok, as a new version of Loki leads the refugees living under Alchemax’s Aesir program. Future issues will introduce readers to new members of the X-Men of the future, and covers for the series also feature Ghost Rider 2099 and Eleanor Camacho, the unkillable daughter of Wade Wilson.

Spider-Man 2099 was created by Peter David and Rick Leonardi in 1992, launching alongside “Doom 2099,” “Punisher 2099,” and “Ravage 2099.” “Roving the spinner-racks and trading cards of the early 1990s, the world of 2099 was my first future dystopia,” said Orlando. “Its neon haunted visions of Marvel’s future close to my heart. And at the forefront of that future, fighting as anyone with his name always has, for the everyday folks of the future? Miguel O’Hara. Spider-Man 2099. So here, decades later, celebrating the 30th Anniversary of 2099 is a dream come true! And there was never any question who’d be the face of this celebration… your friendly, futuristic Spider-Man! And for Miguel, this fight is bigger than ever, since it’s his first time going toe to toe with one of Spider-Man’s greatest villains. Let’s make history together in ‘Spider-Man 2099: Exodus’ — and lead the people of 2099 into a new tomorrow!”

“Steve and this incredible lineup of artists not only take you on a whirlwind tour of the Marvel U of 2099,” Editor Mark Paniccia added. “But [they] reveal some stunning secrets and deliver a time-breaking end no fan will want to miss.”

‘Spider-Man 2099: Exodus – Alpha’ #1, “Spider-Man 2099: Exodus” #1 and “Spider-Man 2099: Exodus” #2 release May 4, May 11 and May 18, respectively. ‘Spider-Man 2099: Exodus – Alpha’ #1, features a cover by Leinil Francis Yu, while “Spider-Man 2099: Exodus” #1 and #2 feature covers by Ryan Stegman.

James Dowling is probably the last person on Earth who enjoyed the film Real Steel. He has other weird opinions about Hellboy, CHVRCHES, Squirrel Girl and the disappearance of Harold Holt. Follow him @James_Dow1ing on Twitter if you want to argue about Hugh Jackman's best film to date.
