Brian Michael Bendis has been talking about a follow-up to 2012’s “Spider-Men” for a while, and it looks like it’s finally happening. Marvel posted a teaser on Twitter the other day, but now we have the full details. “Spider-Men II” will see Bendis joined by Miles Morales co-creator and artist Sara Pichelli, as well as colorist Justin Posner, who also worked on the first series.

The original “Spider-Men” featured the first team-up of 616 Peter Parker and the (former) ultimate universe’s Miles Morales. The series ended with Peter Parker searching for the 616 analogue of Miles Morales. Even though they are now in the same universe, Bendis said that “Spider-Men II” will reveal what Parker found, and use the comparison between the two characters to explore the legacy of Spider-Man. “The legacy that Peter started as Spider-Man is in his face a little bit more. When [Peter] started being Spider-Man, he didn’t have the idea that other people would pick up the mantle. This premise, this theme, gets analyzed from different perspectives, and Miles and Peter are at the center of that.”

It will be interesting to see what Bendis and Pachelli do with the series since the original conceit was Peter Parker and Miles Morales existing in different universes. Because of this, the sequel feels like it’s a couple years too late; however Miles Morales interest is high right now, including the recently announced animated feature film. Bendis is also using it to further explore one of the core themes of Spider-Man: great power and responsibility. “You can apply it in so many different ways to so many different characters. That’s the journey that we’re going to make a pretty big statement with at the end of this series. I think people will be surprised where we’re going with it. I really do,” Bendis says. There could also be an entirely different Miles Morales that hasn’t been revealed yet (the cover to #1 seems to imply as much). In any case, we will all find out when the 5-issue series begins in July.
