Spurrier and Huat Give Legion The Spotlight In X-Men Legacy

When “X-Men Legacy” first launched with Mike Carey, it transferred the adjectiveless “X-Men” book from a Rogue-centric story to be about Professor Xavier and, you guessed it, his legacy. Soon after, Carey gave Rogue the central spotlight again and the “Legacy” aspect seemingly faded away, but as Christos Gage took up the writer-ship of the book, he brought Rogue to the Jean Grey Academy and temporarily focused on the kids, just enough to remind you of why it is called “Legacy” before inevitably flipping back to a Rogue book.

Now, with the upcoming Marvel Now! rebootlaunch, Si Spurrier and Tan Eng Huat take over the book to focus the book on Legion, Xavier’s son, who certainly fits into the “Legacy” aspect once more. As Spurrier tells MTV Geek,

Let’s be honest: David is one seriously f**ked-up kid. He’s spent huge amounts of his life in an induced coma because, historically, whenever he’s on his feet and wandering around he tends to make the entire planet crap itself. (That’s right, carnagefans, we’re bringing you an ongoing series about a living, breathing, mutant WMD.)

So, what’s his goal? There’s obviously a redemptive arc in there, to cover all the horrible collateral damage he’s caused during his messy life. More importantly, there’s the practical consideration of how he can function in the real world without accidentally tearing the universe a new shithole. Again, I can’t say too much about that, but I think we’ve found a way to turn David’s personal torment into a dynamic, intense, relatable struggle.

There’s also the added element of a wee possible spoiler in which Spurrier shies away from a question regarding Professor Xavier’s involvement, leading us to believe that Xavier is most likely going to die:

Geek: Here’s something you won’t be able to talk about! There certainly seems to be the suggestion of… Something… Happening to Professor X at the end of AVX. Without getting too into spoilers, how does this event – or events – affect Legion?

SS: Profoundly. Heh. And you’re right — I can’t talk about it.

Sorry, Professor. Looks like you are the unlucky one out. (We still think Emma is going to bite the dust too, for the record.)

All elements of being backed into a corner during an interview aside, you can check out the full interview at MTV Geek. Look for the book in November.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
