From The Oregonian, writer Chelsea Cain (“Mockingbird”) is returning with her “Man-Eaters” collaborators on “Spy Island,” a new four-issue miniseries published by Dark Horse. The comic book, debuting April 1st, is inspired by 1970s television programs like Fantasy Island and The Love Boat, along with late 20th century intrigue regarding the Bermuda Triangle. Cain’s fellow Portland, Oregon, native Lia Miternique will design and illustrate the book along with artist Elsie McCall, colorist Rachelle Rosenberg, and letterer Joe Caramagna.

Setting a story in the Bermuda Triangle was the impetus for Cain to write “Spy Island.” When describing her fascination with the area, Cain said, “everyone knew that the Bermuda Triangle was the most dangerous phenomenon in the history of the world… Every TV show I loved in the 1980s had some episode that took place in the Triangle. I miss that. I miss unexplained shipwrecks and ghost pirates.”

At the center of “Spy Island” is protagonist Nora Freud, who Cain describes as a “kick-ass feminist super agent.” Nora Freud was written, in part, for Cain’s daughter: “She’s 15 now, and I wanted to write her a story about an adult woman, who could handle herself, who wasn’t overcome with self-doubt. I wanted to write her a hero. Someone competent, incredibly smart, and comfortable in her skin. A woman who didn’t serve anyone else’s narrative. Nora Freud is that woman.”

Artist Miternique was excited with the opportunity to reunite with her “Man-Eaters” collaborators saying, “[‘Spy Island’] is so rich with the Bermuda Triangle setting, intriguing characters and a cool, nostalgic vibe – there is so much to explore visually. As a designer, I love being a part of imagining that world and bringing it to life.”

According to Cain on Twitter, 100 copies of “Spy Island” #1 will be available at Emerald City Comic Con ahead of its street date from March 12-15, 2020.
