Updated October 6, 2019:

It was announced at the Women of Marvel that Javier Pina — whom Kelly Thompson worked with on “Mr. and Mrs. X” will pencil the comic. Original story is as follows:

Marvel Comics has announced that the character Star would be getting her own five-issue miniseries this January. This new miniseries will be written by Kelly Thompson, who co-created the character in the current run of “Captain Marvel” with artist Carmen Carnero. The artist for “Star” is set to be revealed later, with Bleeding Cool saying they’ll be announced at the Women of Marvel panel later at New York Comic Con.

The character of Star first appeared in “Captain Marvel” #8 this year, though the civilian identity for the hero-turned-villain was seeded all the way back in the first issue of Thompson and Carnero’s run. Thompson was on hand to state that, “The excitement surrounding Star has been really fun to watch. And there’s still a big surprise coming in ‘Captain Marvel’ #11 later this month…and it’s the kind of surprise that sort of demands a mini-series like this to explore the mysteries surrounding her and her importance and potential in the larger Marvel Universe.”

Editor Sarah Brunstad also added, “The whole Captain Marvel team loved the character from the beginning, but the fan and retailer response to her has been overwhelming. We’re very grateful and excited to push her even higher in the spotlight. We had such a great time developing her and waiting for her big moment, and I’m ecstatic that Carmen is staying with the character to do the covers for this miniseries.”

Below you can check out the solicitation text for the first issue, Carnero’s cover, as well as Jeehyung Lee’s variant cover. “Star” #1 (of 5) will be out in January 2020, and the aforementioned “Captain Marvel” #11 is due in stores on October 16th.

Ambitious reporter Ripley Ryan was one of the victims caught up in Nuclear Man’s apocalyptic schemes and later became the hero STAR, adored by everyone. But in truth she was Dr. Minerva’s attempt at a Kree-human Super-Soldier. Desperate for the power and strength to control her own destiny, she tried to kill Captain Marvel — and failed. Ripley was left, defeated and powerless, in the Raft. But something strange has happened, and Star now finds herself more powerful than ever before. And no one in the Marvel Universe is prepared for what it means.
