Captain Janeway and the rest of the Star Trek: Voyager crew are back … though not exactly as you remember them. This October, the Mirror Universe Voyager will feature in the first chapter of IDW’s upcoming Mirror Universe event, “Mirrors and Smoke.”
The Voyager one-shot will be written by Paul Allor (“G.I. Joe”) and illustrated by J.K. Woodward (“Star Trek: The Next Generation – Mirror Broken”), both of whom are big Trekkies, according to the announcement at StarTrek.com. Allor says he put great care into his take on the Mirror Universe Voyager crew, making sure to keep Star Trek‘s values in mind even as he threw them out.
“As a child, Star Trek taught me about the power of exploration, the value of kindness and empathy, and the triumph of intelligence and logic over violence and anger,” said Allor. “And now, I am so excited to throw all of those values out the window and tell the story of the Mirror Universe Voyager crew pillaging and plundering its way across the far reaches of space.”
In “Mirrors and Smoke,” the Mirror Voyager will be a rebel vessel led by Captain Janeway, Pirate Queen of the Delta Quadrant (which might be the best job title in Star Trek history). Janeway’s crew must contend with resistance from scavengers like Neelix and Kes, as well as internal conflict stirred up by certainly-not-a-member-of-the-Borg crewmember Annika Hansen.
“I’d given considerable thought to what a Voyager crew would be like in the Mirror Universe, and based the look of the characters on designs I’d already completed,” said Woodward, when talking through his creative process for the one-shot. “With suggestions from IDW and CBS, we developed new ideas and alterations to create a look that I think exceeds anything we’ve done previously.”
There’s no word yet on when the original series and Deep Space Nine chapters of “Mirrors and Smoke” will release, but you can learn a bit more about “Star Trek: Voyager – Mirrors and Smoke” over at Star Trek.com.
