NYCC: Soule & Checchetto Explore The Early Days Of “Obi-Wan & Anakin”

You know, something that always struck me as odd about Star Wars was the way Anakin being trained by Obi-Wan was such a pivotal moment at the end of The Phantom Menace, showing how Obi-Wan had transitioned so fast from learner to teacher and how Anakin had been swept up in this grand prophecy surrounding him, yet by the time we see them again in Attack Of The Clones, that training is almost complete and Anakin is an adult.

Well, it seems like someone at Marvel was having the same thoughts as, announced exclusively over at USAToday, Charles Soule and Marco Checchetto will be exploring Obi-Wan and Anakin’s time together between those films in… “Obi-Wan & Anakin”. Okay, so that title is a little on the nose, sure, but it gets the job done. The series will be a five issue miniseries launching in January and will be set three years after The Phantom Menace as Obi-Wan and Anakin find themselves answering a distress call on a remote planet.

This is, I think, a very good idea. While The Phantom Menace is rather justly maligned by many, I think there are a lot of seeds there that can be explored in further stories that don’t just have to take place during the Clone Wars. This will be the first time we’ll be seeing a story in the new canon set between The Phantom Menace and Attack Of The Clones and so it will be very interesting to see what Soule and Checchetto have in store for us.

Alice W. Castle

Sworn to protect a world that hates and fears her, Alice W. Castle is a trans femme writing about comics. All things considered, it’s going surprisingly well. Ask her about the unproduced Superman films of 1990 - 2006. She can be found on various corners of the internet, but most frequently on Twitter: @alicewcastle
